Heritage Skills Training

Alongside the capital projects, For Tyldesley facilitated numerous heritage skills training events so members of the public could develop and increase heritage skills. The events included:

  • ‘Understanding what we’ve got’ guided tours of the high street for Project Board members and partners at the start of the project, led by Architect Bernadette Bone.
  • A joinery workshop tour with James Thorpe and Son, for Elysium Training, an alternative education provider.
  • Visit to Leander Architectural foundry to collect street name plates that the firm had refurbished or recreated for the streets within the Tyldesley HAZ area, and to understand the craft skills involved. For more information about this project please see the Community Engagement page.
  • As part of Heritage Open Days (HODS), For Tyldesley ran a Heritage Skills Market in September 2022. The day was focused around traditional building and conservation skills, where specialist contractors in the heritage sector ran stalls on how to repair and maintain historic buildings.
  • The Heritage Skills Market in April 2023 was focused around gaining knowledge and experience in heritage skills, alongside gaining an understanding of planning conditions, Conservation Areas and the Historic England HSHAZ scheme. For Tyldesley hoped it would help students to gain an insight into courses and careers on offer within the sector.
  • Working with Wigan and Leigh College, For Tyldesley arranged a series of signwriting workshops run by specialist By Umberto. This was aimed at graphic design and painting and decorating students to introduce traditional skills and techniques and explore potential future career options.
